Measure Threshold Height & Choose an Access Solution
Step 1 of 3 Ramp & Step Access
Measure Threshold Height at Doorway
Using a tape measure, simple measure the height of the door way threshold (the raised section you walk over when entering and exiting) from ground level outside the doorway.
- Write down this measurment in centimetres or inches.
- If the area outside your home has limited space, check the approximate size of the area available to place a ramp or step, to make sure it will fit and that access to the start of the ramp will be suitable for a wheelchair. If the start of the ramp will end up on grass, soil or stones its advisable to consider placing pavers or concrete. If in doubt contact us to discuss the alternatives (a digital picture will be very helpful)
- Also note if the ground is level or sloping where the access equipment is to be located, since this will affect the slope of any ramp placed. If the ground slopes away from the doorway the ramp will be steeper (bad thing) than if the ground is flat. Conversely, if the ground rises moving away from the doorway, the end result will be a less steep ramp (good thing) . While there are no rigid rules that apply to all circumstances, it is recommended to have a 1:12 or less slope on permanent and semi-permanent wheelchair access ramps. Temporary short ramps can be sloped at 1:6 or less if the wheelchair user is assisted (accompanied).
